Humility versus Narcissism

Is social media the cause of the staggering rise of narcissism in our world or does it simply show us more of it?   Either way, we don’t have to emulate the narcissists around us.  We have the right to choose humility and in doing so, demonstrate the most effective kind of leadership in our workplace, in our community and in our home-life.

The gift of humility is something we give to ourselves and to those around us.  The root of the word humility means “ground” and when we are properly grounded, we have the strength to see more perspectives, both our own and those of others.  Studies have shown that true experts in any field are the ones least full of themselves and are the humblest about their knowledge and capabilities.

Being humble can also make us vulnerable and it turns out that the most empathetic and effective leaders are those who are willing to take that risk.  Showing vulnerability does not diminish the role of leadership.  Instead, it creates an environment of trust where others will be encouraged to take risks and learn from mistakes, thereby fostering a culture of trust, collaboration and connection.

At The Coaching Lens, our leadership coaching programs for individuals and teams can help develop these skills and character strengths which allow us to become the great leaders that we need today.
