What do a giant ball of yarn and a tent pole have to do with successful Self-Directed Teams…?
This week, at the 5th Annual “Building an Inclusive Community” Conference in London Ontario, The Coaching Lens had the pleasure of delivering two interactive sessions about what makes “Self Directed Teams” succeed.
So what exactly is a Self-Directed Team? It’s a two part answer: A group of highly motivated individuals with different skills and abilities who have the responsibility and authority to work together toward a common purpose or goal. Also key: A team that takes on the management of their work, the functions formerly performed by supervisors or managers.
How does an organization benefit from a successful Self Directed Team? It’s exciting to count the ways: Increased productivity and quality of service. More creativity and responsiveness to change. Higher employee commitment to the organization and the ability to attract and retain the best people.
The Coaching Lens guides participants through a fun and interactive self-discovery session (yes, involving a giant ball of yarn and a tent pole) that explores the elements of a Self-Directed Team and draws out the strategies needed for success at both the organizational and team levels.
